First Nations

Building the Relationship

Good relationships are the key to success and nowhere is this more true than with First Nations communities.

I have benefited greatly from learning from and listening to leaders, elders and community members of Tseshaht, Hupacasath and the many other First Nations represented in and around Port Alberni.

Free, prior and informed consent must form the bedrock of every interaction with First Nations, and at the heart of those three words is one word: Trust.

The more we build trust, through predictable and respectful dialogue, the more we will be able to work together in ways that benefit the entire population.

Culture and Learning

One way to build relationships with First Nations is to actively participate in cultural and other learning experiences that will benefit all residents.

Councillor Sharie Minions and Chief Councillor Cynthia Dick have done an incredible job on the Reconciliation Committee and I look forward to supporting that committee in every possible way.
