Apparently a Canadian had a hand in inventing the Charged Couple Device (CCD)… that’s the thing that takes the role of the “film” in your digital camera.
Willard Boyle, a Canadian scientist who helped invent a light-sensitive chip, accepted a prestigious engineering award in the U.S. on Tuesday.
Boyle and George Smith will share the $500,000 US award for the invention of the “Charge-Coupled Device (CCD), a light-sensitive component at the heart of digital cameras and other widely used imaging technologies,” the U.S. National Academy of Engineering said.
Cool stuff!
Congratulations to Mr. Boyle and Mr. Smith for their achievement. Digital cameras alone have revolutionized how people think about taking, and saving, and displaying pictures… I can’t think of all the other devices that use it.. from telescopes to… i dunno what!
And Curse Them for filling my computer with 2000 pictures of my wonderful daughter… I’ll never be able to afford to have them all printed!! 🙂
Only 2000? Our pool little Nikon is just about plum worn out with over 3300 exposures since Jade popped out. I hardly ever get to use the camera any more: Erica even called it ‘her’ camera yesterday. I guess the news isn’t all bad in that it’s my excuse for buying a new DSLR (and thanks to Messrs. Boyle and Smith).
