US says “Back Off” on Secret Prisons

Condoleeza Rice is apparently preparing a tough response to the EU’s suspicion of the US using their territory to host secret CIA jails.

Canada has also been investigating claims by Montreal newspaper La Presse that up to 55 flights originating from the US stopped at Canadian airports.

Condi will apparently tell the EU:

“The key point will be ‘We’re all in this together and you need to look at yourselves as much as us,’ ” one official said to the Washington Post, on condition of anonymity. “People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.”

And that is fair enough. I’m sure many EU countries have plenty of skeletons in their closet. That said, that’s no excuse for the United States government to sanction shipping “terrorists” off to secret jails. It was bad enough when they shipped Maher Arar to Syria for two years, even though he has since been cleared of any links to terrorism. At least Mr. Arar had the option of pleading with the Canadian government to get him released.

The people in these “secret” jails do not have that option, so whether they are guilty or not, no one will ever know.

I thought the United States was all about “Freedom” and “Democracy” and the rule of law. Places like Gitmo, Abu Graib, and now these “secret” jails are quickly eroding what little credibility American Foreign Policy ever had.
